About AMVETS
The AMVETS (American Veterans) is a congressionally chartered veterans service organization founded in 1944 to support and advocate for U.S. military veterans and their families. AMVETS is committed to improving veterans’ quality of life through legislative advocacy, benefits assistance, and community-based programs.
Who the Organization Represents
AMVETS represents honorably discharged veterans of the United States Armed Forces who served during wartime or peacetime. Through its national organization, state departments, and local posts, AMVETS provides camaraderie, advocacy, and direct assistance to veterans and their families.
What the Organization Does
- Advocates for veterans’ benefits, healthcare, and legislative priorities at the federal and state levels
- Provides accredited assistance with VA claims and benefits navigation
- Supports veterans through employment, education, and transition programs
- Engages in community service, patriotism, and youth initiatives
- Operates a nationwide network of posts serving veterans and local communities
Where the Organization Operates
AMVETS operates nationally with headquarters in Washington, D.C., and through state departments and local posts across the United States. Local AMVETS posts serve as the primary point of engagement for members and community activities.
Member Eligibility Requirements
Membership in AMVETS is based on honorable military service in the United States Armed Forces.
- Applicants must be honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- Service may include wartime or peacetime duty.
- Applicants must provide acceptable proof of service, such as a DD Form 214 or equivalent documentation.
- Associate memberships may be available for family members, supporters, and non-veterans.
- Final eligibility determination is made in accordance with AMVETS national bylaws.
How Membership Is Structured
Membership is administered through local AMVETS posts organized under state departments and the national organization. Members may participate in post meetings, advocacy efforts, community service projects, and organizational leadership activities.
